Florida Skies
New Song Saturday #6
I got dinner with some pals from high school the other night. We caught up about life and all the regular small talk — dating, kids and work bs. Eventually we did the thing that I assume every group of high school pals who don’t see each other too often do, which collectively wonder out loud what certain classmates are up to now. As we got more and more into it, one of our friends who kept his facebook because he likes being in on the small town gossip, started telling us all of the people we graduated with who have died. The number seemed high. I remember being in an 8th grade math class and my teacher told us that statistically two people in class would be dead before we turned 21. My pals Will and Jasmine sat on either side of me. They both died at 19. People I shared some of the best nights of my adolescence with were gone, and I didn’t even know. The causes of death ran the gamut: cancer, drugs, drunk driving, suicide. Getting older is no joke.
This is a song about the fond memories I have of goofing around with some of the people I know who’ve died. No one specific. Just an amalgamation of angels and the nice times we had together. I can’t really imagine how it would fit onto a record because it’s not quite my style so please enjoy it here. It’s likely the only place it’ll ever exist.
